THERMAE

The whole area surrounding Il Cubetto within about an hour’s drive is thermal, offering spa resorts with waters of different compositions and various therapeutic effects, but certainly with one thing in common: they are all extremely relaxing!

Many of these thermal bath facility, although with different opening hours and days during the week, are open almost all year round (usually with a break of a few weeks right after the Christmas holidays), making them an excellent option for the low seasons when pools and the sea are not accessible to everyone.

IMPORTANT: it is always better to book well in advance – through the websites we indicate for each spa resort – before going there. The spas often have limited entry and some seasons may be in high demand. Some also offer fun packages including spa admission plus an aperitif, or a light lunch, etc., all bookable on their websites.

Here we list those we prefer, but they are not the only ones, and it is possible to find all the others on the internet.

CALIDARIO

About 45 minutes by car from Il Cubetto, in Venturina Terme.

This thermae resort is truly magnificent. There is a large natural outdoor lake with hydromassage jets and small waterfalls – it has a shallow area where you can stand and a deeper area for swimming – as well as an indoor thermal pool spa set in a truly evocative environment offering qualified services such as massages and more. Additionally, there is a high-quality restaurant.

These are the ancient beneficial thermal springs of the Etruscans and later the Romans, known as Aquae Populoniae, connected to nearby Populonia (another place in the Val Cornia area definitely worth a visit; see the MEDIEVAL VILLAGES section of this website).

The surrounding buildings, although not that ancient, are still very old and charming: they are part of an old paper mill that represents a splendid example of perfectly restored industrial archaeology. Especially in the evening, when it lights up with many small lights at sunset, the atmosphere is truly magical.

Highly recommended: if you choose to visit in the evening, enjoy the aperitif with sparkling wine and fresh fruit served on a floating table while you relax in the beneficial waters of the lake.

It is possible to rent bathrobes on site, and unlike most spas, wearing a swim cap is not required—only tying your hair back.

A day at the spa is perfectly complemented by a visit and perhaps dinner in nearby Bolgheri, famous for its Cypress Avenue (Viale dei Cipressi) and as the land of some of the best DOC wines in the world (also see the MEDIEVAL VILLAGES section of this website).

LA CERRETA

About one hour by car from Il Cubetto, in Sassetta Terme.

We are in the heart of the Val di Cornia, which is the northernmost part of the Tuscan Maremma. There are three thermal pools inspired by Etruscan and Roman architecture, with water at different temperatures, set in a large park surrounded by greenery, among woods of ancient chestnut trees and majestic oaks.

All around, there is a biodynamic farm with a vegetable garden, orchard, vineyards, and livestock including cattle, pigs, horses, bees and poultry. The two dining spots (an Osteria delle Terme for light lunches and a restaurant offering traditional Tuscan dishes) serve food that is 90% produced on-site. There is also a spa offering various services.

The nearby small village of Sassetta definitely deserves a visit. Dating back to 1115 and majestically perched on the slope of a hill like any respectable medieval village, it is a place still far from mass tourism circuits, but perhaps for this reason particularly beautiful and authentic. Don’t expect shops and Michelin-starred restaurants; Sassetta is a poetically rustic place where time seems to have stood still.

CASCIANA THERMAE

About 30 minutes by car from Il Cubetto, in Casciana Terme.

The atmosphere of these thermal baths is completely different from the one inspired by the ancient Etruscan and Roman spas of Venturina and Sassetta, although here too the healing properties of the waters have been recognized since ancient times. Then, it was the famous Countess Matilda of Canossa – we are around the year 1000 – who built the first facilities to enjoy their benefits: so much so that the thermal water of Casciana Terme is called Acqua Mathelda.

The current location of the thermal pools – one outdoor in the heart of the village and one indoor, more dedicated to strictly health-related activities – is set within an imposing Neoclassical building, typical of a late 19th-century setting when spas became the preferred holiday destination for high society across Europe. Both the spa facility, which also houses the wellness center, and the buildings of the thermal village that developed around it, now hosting excellent restaurants and hotels, retain the nostalgic charm of that era.

SATURNIA NATURAL THERMAE

About 2 hours and 20 minutes by car from Il Cubetto, in Saturnia.

These thermal baths are farther away, but we still recommend them because many guests have visited from here on a day trip, often combining with excursions to some of the many beautiful medieval villages in the Maremma Grossetana, first of all the incredible Pitigliano, Sovana and Sorano.

The real attraction here is not the spa facility itself, although it is very famous, but the incredible area of the Cascate del Molino (Mill’s Waterfalls). Here, thermal water flows freely in a truly unique setting, a series of natural pools filled with turquoise water and which form large sloping terraces where you can bathe freely 24 hours a day (including at night, which is an unmissable experience). There is no entrance fee to access the thermal waters.

However, there is a paid parking lot about 300 meters away, a Service Center with bathrooms, changing rooms, showers, hairdryers, and lockers, as well as a bar/snack point with an adjacent picnic area. The only downside can be the crowds, which in some seasons are quite significant, and since no reservations are possible, you have to try your luck!

BAGNI SAN FILIPPO – FOSSO BIANCO AND FORMER FURNACE

About 2 hours and 30 minutes by car from Il Cubetto, in Bagni San Filippo.

This is also a thermal site located a bit farther away, but we mention it because it is truly unique and the trip is well worth your time. Like the Cascate del Molino in Saturnia, we are not talking about artificial pools inside a wellness center, but a place entirely shaped by nature, where bathing is free of charge. Here too, if you wish, there is a hotel with a paid spa, boasting the oldest thermal pool in the province of Siena, open to the public from March to October every day except Tuesday… But this is certainly not the main attraction.

The natural thermae consist of a series of very hot thermal springs that flow into a small cold river, the Fosso Bianco, which over the centuries has created truly incredible limestone formations. These form waterfalls and small pools – some carved out over centuries by local inhabitants – along a path that makes them all easily accessible, in a walk of rare beauty through the forest. The first pools are shallow and less warm; continuing on, you reach an impressive calcium carbonate formation, built up and fed by thermal water that still gushes from its summit, called the “Balena Bianca” (“White Whale”) because it resembles an open whale’s mouth with visible baleen. Here, the water emerges at 48°C and meets the cold river water, creating a fascinating contrast both for bathing and for the white-turquoise color that the thermal stream takes on. Further along the river, you’ll find other natural pools that make up the true Fosso Bianco, at the end of which is the paid wellness center. The pools have different temperatures, depending on whether the hot spring is right there or if the natural pool collects the water from the upper basins. So, depending on the outside temperature, you’ll be spoiled for choice! In some sections of the riverbed, you can also enjoy the therapeutic muds, traditionally used by locals to nourish and smooth the skin.

At Bagni San Filippo, there is also another natural thermal basin: the one at the former furnace. The old industrial buildings are still visible, in front of which white limestone terraces form thermal pools and offer white muds with which you can play in countless ways. Here too, access is free all year round and 24 hours a day, and parking is also free. The water is very hot, even hotter than at Fosso Bianco, making this place a very fun destination even in the middle of winter.

The thermae are located in the province of Siena, in the beautiful Val D’Orcia, which is also home to many locations chosen for filming Ridley Scott’s Gladiator. This is a region of gentle hills dotted with one beautiful medieval village after another, such as Castiglione d’Orcia or San Quirico D’Orcia, both about twenty minutes from Fosso Bianco, but also the famous Pienza (known for its wines and a truly special pecorino cheese), or the evocative Bagno Vignoni with its incredible Piazza delle Sorgenti, also called the Vascone: a large 16th-century rectangular pool that collects a hot, steaming thermal spring right in the center of the medieval village (not suitable for bathing). Or the well-known Montalcino, at the heart of one of Italy’s best red wine regions. Fosso Bianco is also quite close to the wonderful Abbey of Sant’Antimo, one of the most evocative sites in the Monte Amiata area, and together with a dinner in one of the many incredible local restaurants, can make for an unforgettable day trip.
